Savour Ottawa Promotes Local Food Near National Capital Region

A little while ago I wrote about Savour Muskoka, one of the organizations that's starting to promote local food and food-related tourism in Ontario like the economuseum and food route initiatives in Quebec and New Brunswick. Well, those planning a trip to eastern Ontario will be interested to know there's also a group called Savour Ottawa that focuses on the 100-mile range around the National Capital region.

A partnership of Ottawa Tourism, non-profit advocacy group Just Food and the City of Ottawa, Savour Ottawa promotes farmers' markets and is encouraging hotels to cook with local ingredients. They don't seem to be offering public events yet, but this past week they hosted a bus tour of local farms for local food industry types.

Their list of members makes a good starting point for anyone trying to track down local-food restaurants and producers in the Ottawa area. So does Omnivore's Ottawa, a blog written by the entertaining Ottawa Citizen food writer Ron Eade (@RonEade on Twitter), which has a link from the Savour Ottawa site.

Besides Savour Muskoka, similar Ontario groups include the Niagara Culinary Trail, Prince Edward County's Taste the County and Savour Stratford.
