Spoke too soon on the US bill HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act 2009. On July 30, it passed in the House of Representatives by roll call vote (283 for, 142 against, 8 abstentions).
Among the arguments against HR 2749, some believe it "would impose a one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme on small farms and local artisanal producers; and it would disproportionately impact their operations for the worse. HR 2749 does not address underlying causes of food safety problems such as industrial agriculture practices and the consolidation of our food supply."

Great article on food safety. I know you can find many more interestnig articles on food safety systems at http://www.industrial-machinery-news.com
